HARTFORD/WETHERSFIELD, CT — A Hartford man nabbed in Wethersfield after a 2023 incident was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years in federal prison for firearm offenses and for violating the terms of his supervised release, federal prosecutors said.

David X. Sullivan, U.S. attorney for Connecticut, announced Wednesday that Morris Carter III, 37, also known as “Mo,” received a 156-month sentence from Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport.

The sentence includes 136 months for the firearm convictions and a consecutive 20 months for violating supervised release.

According to trial evidence, Carter was involved in a fight at a convenience store in Hartford’s South End in the early morning of Feb. 19, 2023.

Surveillance footage showed him holding a firearm and striking another person in the head with a firearm magazine, which caused ammunition to fall out during the altercation.

Prosecutors said Carter fled the scene, drove toward Wethersfield, and threw two handguns from his vehicle.

Wethersfield police later stopped the car on Nott Street, recovered a loaded magazine from under a passenger seat, and arrested him.

Later that morning, a Wethersfield resident reported finding one of the discarded guns at the end of her driveway.

Officers searched the area and recovered both firearms, along with a magazine and ammunition.

Investigators also collected ammunition from the convenience store.

Carter had been detained since his arrest.

On Aug. 15, 2025, a jury found him guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

His prior criminal record includes a 2013 federal conviction for conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.

Authorities said he was on supervised release for that case when the 2023 offenses occurred.
