KNOX was founded in 1966 by Hartford City Councilwoman Betty Knox, who had a vision to improve community development and environmental programs in Hartford.

KNOX relies on donors like State Farm to carry out its mission.

State Farm funding will purchase much-needed materials and supplies, such as seeds, plants, soil, and garden tools.

The money will also help KNOX engage 24 underemployed, Hartford young adults in an apprenticeship program.

Apprentices will enhance the community gardens while learning new skills, such as repairing garden beds, mowing, spreading compost, and more.

“One of our focuses at State Farm is to support community development in areas of need,” said State Farm Corporate Responsibility Analyst Jennifer Young. “The Community Garden Program supports neighbors facing food insecurity, creates jobs, and adds beauty to Hartford. This is a win-win for all involved, and we’re proud to have provided $38,000 since 2020 to fund this beneficial initiative.”

“Our community gardens bring Hartford families together to grow fresh vegetables and enjoy the city’s green spaces! Gardeners love connecting with the earth and to one another as they grow healthy food for their families and neighbors,” said Patrick Doyle, KNOX’s executive director. “I am so grateful to State Farm for their partnership in providing these benefits to the Hartford community.”
