Beacon is a 2 -2-year-old yellow Labrador retriever who came to the EHPD from the organization "Dogs for Better Lives," a non-profit organization out of Oregon and Massachusetts.
The organization provides extensive training and then places the dogs in a variety of different capacities including for the hearing impaired, children and adults with autism, and facility dogs.

Beacon has undergone training to provide crucial support for those in crisis and to be an everyday companion for the staff at the police department, town buildings, and community.
"Friendly and approachable, Beacon stands out as one of the few police dogs residents can pet and engage with," wrote the EHPD.
"His gentle demeanor and comforting presence will have a positive impact on everyone he interacts with."
Beacon's handler, EHPD officer Marc Caruso, is a 22-year veteran of the East Hartford Police Department.
Caruso is the department's community engagement officer and the public information officer.
His extensive experience and community relationships make him an ideal handler for Beacon, wrote the EHPD.
"We are excited to introduce Beacon to the East Hartford community," said EHPD Chief Mack S. Hawkins. "Beacon's role goes beyond just providing support in crisis situations. He's here to develop positive relationships for both our staff and community members."
When people see Beacon and Caruso in the community, they are welcome to say "hello."
"Beacon looks forward to meeting everyone and becoming an integral part of the East Hartford community," wrote the EHPD.
