Police Search For Grave Robbers In Hartford Crime

A 70-year-old grave at Jewish cemetery was recently dug up and the remains stolen.

HARTFORD, CT — A grave was dug up and remains stolen recently from the Agudas Achim Cemetery in Hartford, according to reports. Police have not identified the remains but according to the tombstone, the burial took place in the 1950s.

The grave was dug up a few days ago and two birds were left behind. It appears that the grave was dug up by hand.

Police believe the grave robbery may have taken place on Halloween, according to WTNH.

The Jewish cemetery is located on Waverly Street at Tower Avenue. The act of digging up a grave is considered sacrilegious in the Jewish faith.

The police department's Major Crimes and Crime Scene Division will be investigating the incident. It's unclear why this particular grave was targeted.

The Connecticut Anti-Defamation League called the incident"disconcerting and upsetting," FOX 61 reported. The perpetrator could face charges including desecration and larceny.
