HARTFORD, CT — City officials Monday afternoon released a chilling image of the moment just before a Hartford Police Department officer shot and killed a suspect pointing a gun at him.

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin confirmed the fatal incident at about 2 p.m. Monday afternoon at Westland and Barbour streets.

"There’s still a lot to learn about this incident, and we will share everything that we can as soon as we can," Bronin said via social media.

He said Hartford Police received a dispatch call about a vehicle with an armed individual who was threatening others.

Bronin said officers pulled the car over, and an individual on the passenger side got out of the car and aimed and fired a handgun at the police officer as he approached.

The officer returned fire and the individual was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Bronin said, adding the officer is uninjured.

Police have yet to identify the suspect killed.

"I know that this is difficult and painful for our community to experience," wrote Bronin.

He said the state Inspector General will assume the independent investigation.

"In the meantime, I think it is important for the community to see this image, taken from video from our cameras near Barbour Street," he said, alluding to the surveillance image released.
