'Theater Week' Showcases Greater Hartford's Performance Scene

The two-week event starts Sunday, Oct. 1, and includes theatrical organizations from Hartford, West Hartford and Manchester.

GREATER HARTFORD, CT — A new, two-week event starting in October will showcase all of Hartford's theatrical and entertainment offerings with multiple events at multiple venues.

The Greater Hartford Arts Council (GHAC) earlier this month announced the inaugural program, “Theater Week” program.

The event will feature discounts on tickets, backstage tours, conversations with cast members as well as workshops with screenwriters, directors and producers.

The collective event, aimed at promoting the area's theater and arts scene, is from Oct. 1-14 and will be available at six locations throughout greater Hartford.

Participating organizations are:

HartBeat Ensemble — a community-based professional theater company, that creates provocative theater that connects the community beyond traditional barriers of race, gender, class and geography.

It is located at 360 Farmington Ave.

• Hartford Stage - a Tony Award-winning regional non-profit theater located in downtown Hartford, 50 Church St.

• Little Theater of Manchester - Presenting a wide variety of performing arts programs and live theatre productions, concerts and other performing arts programs. It operates Cheney Hall, the oldest operating theater in Connecticut.

It is located at 177 Hartford Road, Manchester

• Playhouse on Park!— Managed under the direction of Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc., Playhouse on Park is Greater Hartford’s award-winning destination for the performing arts.

Playhouse on Park offers a wide range of professional theatre productions.

It is located at 244 Park Road, West Hartford.

• The Bushnell - A Hartford-based, performing arts center that presents, creates, inspires and shares the best in the performing arts.

It is located at 166 Capitol Ave.

• TheaterWorks Hartford – With more than 30-plus years of producing award-winning theater, this ‘state of the art’ performance space reaches out to welcome the community in the city we call home.

It is located at 233 Pearl St.

The arts council is hopeful "Theater Week" event will show a side of the Hartford area that might not be as known as it should be.

"Theater Week is where our premiere theaters take center spotlight, illuminating the vibrant arts scene of the Hartford region," wrote the Greater Hartford Arts Council.

"The extraordinary 14 days will not only showcase the unparalleled talent and creativity of our local theaters but will also open the doors to a world of live performances and events, bringing the magic of theater to every corner of our community. Get ready to be captivated, inspired, and transported as Theater Week unveils the power of the performing," said the Rev. Dr. Shelley Best, chief executive officer of the Greater Hartford Arts Council.
