TheaterWorks announces Renovation Kick-off

HARTFORD – Rob Ruggiero, TheaterWorks Producing Artistic Director announced today that a $5.7 million renovation of the theater’s historic home at 233 Pearl Street will begin immediately. TheaterWorks previously announced that the theater had received 2 Urban Act Grants in the amount of $2.7 million as grants-in-aid to assist with the renovations and improvements to City Arts on Pearl. Funding will be used to support extensive renovations to the historic 1927 building, which include replacement of the HVAC system, electrical and fire protection systems upgrades, elevator upgrades, and various renovations to the theater.

Rob said “This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the state, our patrons and TheaterWorks’ Board of Directors. The Board’s dedication and commitment, in particular, have been essential during the initial fundraising phase and in establishing the scope of the project. Their courage in support of this vision is remarkable. This is an exciting and challenging time for us. ”

The renovations are expected to be completed by early September. In the interim, the theater has taken up temporary residence at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Rob added “We are grateful to Tom (Tom Loughman, Director and CEO of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art) and all the staff at the Wadsworth for their warm and generous welcome.” TheaterWorks commitment to downtown drove the decision to collaborate with the Atheneum. In the early planning stages, it became clear that a move beyond the walk-able downtown district would have significant economic impacts to many local businesses.

Board President Gerry Lupacchino added, “These renovations are essential to the theater’s future, both artistically and operationally. The Board is committed to ensuring that TheaterWorks continues to play a vital role in Hartford's economy.”

Rob with the support of the Board will lead the building wide renovations designed to address health, energy efficiency and safety issues as well as improve the patron experience and the artistic product. The project is being designed and built by the SLAM Collaborative of Glastonbury CT. SLAM President Bob Pulito, a long standing member of TheaterWorks' Board, is leading the team. To date, the theater has secured $4.3 million in support and is actively working to raise an additional $1.4 million to complete the financing of the renovation.
