'Yoga In Our City' To Bring Benefits Of Yoga To Hartford

The unique programs 11th season starts Sunday at Bushnell Park.

HARTFORD, CT — A program to bring the physical and mental benefits of yoga to the masses starts up Sunday, May 21, in Hartford's most prominent park.

Connecticare and "Yoga In Our City" will begin its 11th season of free yoga classes on Sunday with free yoga mini-sessions, an affirmation banner, local vendors and giveaways.

The event starts at 10 a.m. at Hartford's Bushnell Park, 1 Jewell St.

There, yoga instructors Angelica Mangual and Yizza Galdamez will be on hand to conduct lessons and they'll be joined by Connecticare representatives, state Rep. Maryam Khan, D-Windsor, and state Rep. Jane Garibay, D-Windsor.

"The practice of yoga offers many physical and mental health benefits, including: improved strength, balance, flexibility, heart health, sleep quality, and energy, stress relief, improved cognitive skills such as learning and memory, improved mood, and decreased anxiety," reads an announcement from "Yoga In Our City."

"Yoga In Our City" is a Connecticut program that, essentially, brings the calm, soothing benefits of yoga to folks living in the state's urban areas.

It started in Hartford in 2012 and Connecticare has been involved since 2015.

In 2023, the program will offer regularly scheduled, free yoga classes from May to October, with Sunday's event being a special kickoff celebration for the 11th season total.

This year, the program will offer 700 total classes to residents in several cities in the state.
