Gales Ferry Library To Remain Open

Eight days after announcing Gales Ferry Library would close indefinitely, an agreement has now been reached to keep it open.

LEDYARD, CT - Eight days after announcing Gales Ferry Library would close indefinitely, an agreement has been reached to keep it open, the New London Day reported. Library officials are now working on a cost savings plan that will involve cutbacks on hours and staff for both local libraries.

Mayor Fred Allyn III came to the agreement with library Director Gale Bradbury in a meeting Tuesday, according to the New London Day. The news comes only a day after residents voiced their dismay at a semi-annual Gales Ferry District meeting on Monday, which officials said contributed to the decision.

Bradbury is working on a plan for the library's operating schedule that is hoped to result in $115,000 to $120,000 in annual savings, according to the New London Day. Bradbury said the plan will involve cutting hours at both of the town's libraries, as well as laying off 11 of both libraries' current 15 part-time employees.
