Ledyard Police Warn of Vacation Rental Scam

A Ledyard resident contacted police after being scammed out of money earmarked for a vacation rental home.

The Ledyard Police Department received a report from a Ledyard resident who was planning a vacation. The resident searched online for a rental place and police shared their experience on their Facebook page:“

Finding one online, the poster asked them to wire half of the rental fee to place the reservation. The resident then wired the money as directed. Unfortunately, the posting was not legitimate and the poster was able to steal the wired funds. Similar scams have been occurring with rental properties , etc being posted. In our experience, always be leery of requests for wired funds. Once they are sent, and received, the wired money is gone.”

Ledyard police working with the police department of the state where the resident was attempting to visit, in an attempt to locate the person who received the money.
