Parents Concerned About Student Safety in Ledyard

Officials eliminated two buses as well as a number of stops on all routes.

The Ledyard Board of Education recently voted to cut “out of town” buses from its budget, causing parents to express concern that their childrens’ safety may be at risk, Eyewitness News reported.

The two school buses that are being cut provided transportation for students attending out-of-district schools. According to the news channel, the cuts save the town about $100,000, but parents say these students now have to walk up to three miles from one of the designated drop off points to get home.

The board said the decision was in line with what other districts have done.

Parents meet the out-of-district school buses before 6:30 a.m. at the Juliet Long School. They said the problem was on the return trip home in the afternoon.

Todd Willis, a Ledyard parent, told Eyewitness News that it was unacceptable that the district wasn’t providing a safe place for the students to wait before they could be picked up by their parents.
