48,000 Christmas Lights Set to Music in Waterford
It's Christmas for a cause — the family collects donations for Toys for Tots. Marines will collect toys in person two days this month.

It’s the miles of extension cords that pose the biggest challenge — how do you store those in an organized way?
For Darlene and Scott Yarmey, that didn’t pose too big of a problem. The two have had a lot of practice — they’ve been going all out with Christmas decorations for the past 13 years.
“We’ve had to create some handmade riggings to accommodate the vast amount of cords and plugs that create our display,” Darlene told Patch recently.

And what a display it is — 48,000 Christmas lights dance in time to music at 69 Mullen Hill Rd. in Waterford.

“We’ve received cards from across the country, thanking us for our light displays,” Darlene said. “Many people travel to visit loved ones, and they drive by our house and enjoy the lights. I continue to receive thank you notes from as far away as California!”
People used to stop by and offer donations for the display and that’s when the Yarmey family discovered an opportunity to give back.
“Although we never accepted any money, we thought it could benefit others,” she said. “We called a representative from Toys for Tots and got in contact with Sergeant Robert Montminy about three years ago. He came to our house and said he would be there for one night. He had such success that first night, that he came back for a second. Now, he plans on coming to our house each year.”
This year, Marines from Toys for Tots will be on hand to collect donations, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 20 and 21. If you can’t drop off a toy on those dates, Darlene said donations of new, unwrapped toys are accepted anytime.
For the Yarmeys, they truly love spreading happiness around. Darlene reflected on the joy her family gets back in turn:
“Hearing people in their cars laughing and enjoying the display, or overhearing someone in a store or hallway telling others about this crazy Christmas light house they saw the evening before — it is just as enjoyable for us to watch, and we hope everyone enjoys as much as we do.”
