"Racing with protective front bandages over the turf course labeled firm, Animal Kingdom trailed the field early on in the six-horse field before making a four-wide move under jockey John Velazquez to move into third along the backstretch. The chestnut colt kept gaining on the leaders while racing three-wide on the turn for home before grabbing the lead at the top of the stretch," the New York Daily news story says. "From there his stride kept lengthening like it did last year in the stretch of the Derby, and Animal Kingdom easily drew off to score by two lengths, running the mile-and-a-sixteenth in 1:41.72."
