Being outdoors in the summer sun is many people’s favorite past time, including my own. I was just reading this article (http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/category/living-well,mind-and-body,environment,sex,sleep,stress,seeking-serenity/?hpt=he_nav) on CNN the other day warning teenagers to beware of sun burns because having just 5 blistering sun burns before the age of 20 has been linked with an 80% increase in melanoma. It also advises that teens should beware of the sun and take particular care not to get burned. This last piece of advice is left for interpretation, but 9 times out of 10, if you ask any doctor what that means, it is to apply sunscreen liberally throughout the day, but is that really the best way to prevent skin cancer? Are sunscreens safe? It has been my personal opinion for years that sunscreens cause more harm than good and now science is starting to suggest the same thing.
