Daniel Hand High School Tigers Take Shelton In Wrestling, 81-0; Seniors Honored During Last Home Meet
Hand Still Ranked Third In The State; Post Season Action Starts This Weekend
It wasn’t planned this way, but like many things this winter, weather caused the postponement of the Hand vs. Shelton wrestling match originally scheduled for last Wednesday.
This was to be Hand’s last home match and was scheduled as “Senior Night.” Realizing how important this night was to the Hand squad, Shelton agreed to send a team to the re-scheduled match on Monday. Unfortunately, the Shelton coach made a strategic move to hold back his number one wrestlers and sent a squad of replacements. Shelton has two tough matches scheduled this week against Xavier and Guilford and the Shelton coach must have felt that three matches would be too much as they try to get ready for the SCC Tournament this weekend.
The night started off with She showed that she is ready if the NFL wants to draft her for the next Super Bowl.

Then each of the six seniors was announced and congratulated by their teammates and parents. They are: Eddie Carroll, Welles Sakmar, Alex Weissman, Jack McShane, Scott Anderson and Grant Russell. Eddie Carroll was not in attendance as he was away at a previously scheduled college visit.
Senior Jack McShane got the match started at 160 and recorded the first pin of the evening. That set the tone for the rest of the night as the Shelton replacements were no match for the Tigers. The night featured eight pins, (five in the first period), four forfeits, a major decision and a technical fall. Hand scored 81 out of 84 possible team points and tied their team record for points scored. (Hand defeated New London on January 2, 2010 by the same score 81-0.)

Hand’s record is now 22-1 as they head into the last dual meet of the season; Wednesday night at Amity. They are still ranked number 3 in the state coaches’ poll as published by the Norwich Bulletin.
Post season action will begin this weekend with the SCC Tournament to be held at Foran High School in Milford. Hand will attempt to capture their fourth straight SCC crown. JV matches will take place on Friday February 11th with the Varsity Tournament to follow all day on Saturday February 12th.
The weekend after will feature the Class Tournaments. Hand will participate in the Class L Tournament which will be held at Bristol Central High School. The CIAC State Open Championships will take place on February 25/26, 2011 at the New Haven Athletic Center Field House.
