Demonology and the Occult During the Civil War
Demonology and the Occult During the Civil War Monday, October 5th at 7PM, Scranton Library

The American Civil War was a time of great spirituality and study in the metaphysical. Not only were people heavily religious due to the Second Great Awakening, they began to study the realms of the underworld and took part in organizations such as the Knights of the Golden Circle, the Order of the Palladium and Christian Occult Groups.
The Civil War was also a time of metaphysical study into Spirit Photography, Seances, and the use of a medium to speak to the dead. This lecture will look at the different ways the people of the Civil War dealt with the spirituality of the dead and the ways in which they were aided by non-religious groups to cope with loss.
Presented by historian and author Matthew Bartlett. Matthew is a 2013 graduate of the American Military University with a Master’s in Military History with a specialization in Civil War studies. He is the author of numerous books on the Civil War and Connecticut history.
