Madison Police Department Welcomes Officer David Flores

The officer was recently appointed to the police department after graduating from the New Haven Police Academy.

Officer David Flores was recently appointed to the Madison Police Department, the New Haven Register reports.

Flores recently graduated from the police academy and was hired by both the Madison and New Haven police departments, the paper reports. Flores chose Madison as that is where his wife grew and is also the town where he served as his stepson’s little league coach.

According to the Register, Flores attended Central Connecticut State University for two years where he was working towards a degree in graphic design. Following this, Flores joined the Army National Guard.

In 2004, Flores joined the Stop and Shop Peapod Team. Flores told the Register his time in the Army drove him to being a police officer.

Flores tried to be a police officer for five years but wasn’t scoring high enough on tests, the paper reports. After taking one-on-one classes, Flores began to improve. He was once again ready to give up after rupturing his achilles but took his tests after nine months of rehab and graduated from the New Haven Police Academy on Oct. 3.

Sgt. Joseph Race of the Madison Police Department told the paper it was important to have Flores especially because he is fluent in Spanish. Flores told the Register he was honored by the opportunity to serve Madison saying his appointment opens doors for minority police officers who feel they can only serve in a big city.

The Madison Police Department congratulated Flores on his appointment on their website.

Correction: Officer David Flores is not the first Hispanic officer to serve with the Madison Police Department, Officer David Baez was the department’s first Hispanic Officer who served with the police department for many years.
