Hand Wrestlers Defeat Guilford 57-15; Remain Undefeated At 16-0

The Tigers rolled to a big win on Senior Night at Kenefick Gymnasium in Guilford on Wednesday.

 

The lone senior on the Guilford wrestling squad, Ray Sherwood, was recognized with his parents and grandmother before the match on Wednesday night.  Sherwood was also the first to wrestle at 171 lbs. where he faced Kevin Wivell of Hand.  Sherwood scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the first period and the score remained 2-0 going in to the third period.  Wivell then scored on a reversal to tie the match 2-2 with 1:39 remaining.  Wivell then elected to allow Sherwood a one point escape so that he could attempt to score a takedown for the lead.  Sherwood was able to counter all of Wivell's attempts and secured his 3-2 win.  

At 182 Carter Chatillion (H) pinned Colton Schilling (G) at 0:38.

At 195 Mark Listano (G) pinned Ned Berky (H) at 2:30.

At 220 Victor Buchetto (H) led Tony Dinse (G) 6-2 going in to the third period but found himself in tight spot and was pinned by Dinse with only one seond remaining in the match.  Guilford now led 15-6, but they would score no more team points for the rest of the night.

At 280 Joe Demichele (H) wasted no time and recorded the fastest fall of the night pinning David  Cooper (G) in 20 seconds.  

The next three matches were won by Hand all with first period pins; 106 - Matt Elias pinned Colin Pittone in 1:17, 113 - Jonah Lewis pinned Brandon Hallaway 1:27, 120 Kevin Mallon pinned Nate Monte 1:25.

At 126 Andrew Kennally (H) went the distance with Jake Lundberg (G) and came out with a 10-4 win.  Hand now led the match 33-15.

At 132 Justin Elias's match with Ken Carregal was stopped at the 3:50 mark as Elias was leading 15-0 and he was awarded a technical fall.

At 138 Tucker MacGregor (H) pinned Josh Malumud (G) in 1:32.

At 145 Jake Savoca (H) pinned Nate Misbach (G) at 3:28.

At 152 Ben Onofrio (H) scored a major decision, 9-1, over Brandon Carney (G).

And in the last match of the night, at 160, Connor Carroll (H) defeated Scott Primavera (G) 6-0.  That made the final team score Hand 57, Guilford 15.

The second ranked Hand Tigers remain undefeated at 16-0.  Their next match will be Saturday at the Ridgefield Challenge.  Next week they will hold their Senior Night on Tuesday January 31st when Shelton will come to the Polson Gym.  The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
