Help Support Artists Over 60
Come to the Wall Street Gallery to view an exhibition of works by William Kent. All proceeds go to the William Kent Charitable Foundation.
Come to the Wall Street Gallery in Madison, CT to view a vibrant and sometimes controversial exhibition of works by artist William Kent running from May 31-July 9. We present this show in hopes of raising money to continue Mr. Kent’s mission of aiding artists in need. Kent formed the William Kent Charitable Foundation in order to help support artists over the age of 60 who suffer from financial difficulties. The Wall Street Gallery will be taking no commission, instead passing all proceeds to the William Kent Charitable Foundation. We also wish to share a chance for everyone to get a small glimpse of his remarkable Pop-style artwork and wood sculpture.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1919, Kent graduated from Northwestern University and attended Yale University to pursue music and composition. During his time at Yale, he discovered a passion for art and taught himself to paint and sculpt. By 1963, Kent was carving slate blackboards and printing on rice paper and fabric. He exhibited at several galleries and museums along the East Cost and alongside notable contemporaries such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg in the 1965 Whitney Biennial.
Kent moved to Durham, CT in 1964 and worked as the first curator for the John Slade Ely House in New Haven. From 1963-1976 Kent carved slates and made prints. From 1977-2012 he shifted into carving monumental wood sculptures, and finished 226 by 2012. In 2014 Kent’s property was protected by the Historic Preservation Council of the State Historic Preservation Office and tours of Kent’s studio are available to view his artistic legacy of over 200 sculptures and 2,000 prints created throughout his lifetime.
