Madison Looking to Ban Smoking at Beaches and Parks

The town's stated goal for the proposed ordinance is to focus on having a healthier community.

Madison residents will have an opportunity to weigh in on the town’s proposed ordinance that would ban smoking at town beaches and parks.

The public hearing is 7 p.m. March 23.

Madison is proposing to ban cigarettes including e-cigarettes at all town beaches and parks. The move is inspired to promote a healthier community reports, media outlets including WFSB 3 TV and the New Haven Register.

The ordinance would be enforced by town staff and police.

“We’ve just become more and more conscious of the health effects of secondhand smoke,” said Fillmore McPherson, Madison’s first selectman, according to WFSB 3 TV. “And of course the nuisance value has been there all along, the nuisance value to the non-smokers.”
