The organization started in April as OutRUN the Odds, a Facebook page created by Nicole Cretella Burke, Shoreline Times reports. Burke set up the page to have friends and family commit to running 3,800 miles to celebrate Liz Shuman’s 38th birthday.

Shuman is a Madison native who suffers from cystic fibrosis.

According to Mayo Clinic, cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system. The disease affects more than 70,000 people worldwide.

The organization successfully celebrated Shuman’s birthday last month at the Madison Surf Club. While the organization does not solicit funds, it will be donating the money it raised at Shuman’s birthday party to Yale University’s Adult Cystic Fibrosis program.

Shuman, an avid runner, fights the disease every day and it is not uncommon for her to hospitalized, Shoreline Times reports. She constantly checks the OutRUN page to see how many miles have been logged.

Burke told the paper that people were eager to get involved with something that’s good as the organization simply asks people to be positive, healthy and to be part of a community.
