Madison Prepares To Dig out From Major Winter Storm

Heavy snow and high winds continued Monday throughout the region.

MADISON, CT — As Sunday's major winter storm continued on Monday, Madison prepared to dig out from under mounds of snow.

Schools were closed on Monday, as was Madison Town Hall and several businesses.

Gov. Ned Lamont declared a State of Emergency Sunday afternoon, though power outages in Madison remained at a minimum. As of 9:45 a.m. on Monday, 316 out of 9,367 customers in Madison were without power, according to Eversource.

Statewide, more than 15,000 were without power on Monday.

In Madison, officials also declared a snow emergency, and urged residents to stay off the roads:

Residents are strongly encouraged to stay home, and avoid traveling during and immediately following the storm to keep roads clear for plow trucks and emergency vehicles. As a reminder:

- Secure any items that may be affected by strong wind
- Always treat downed wires as if they are live and dangerous– do not approach or touch them
- Fully charge devices ahead of the storm (including portable chargers/power banks), check flashlights, and plan for possible power issues
- In the event of power outages, be sure to run generators outdoors and away from windows and doors
- Limit travel and time outside if you are able
- Give plows plenty of space
- Do not drive around barricades

Throughout the immediate area, snow totals were in excess of a foot, according to the National Weather Service, with more snow on the way on Monday.
