Madison Resident and Georgetown Hoya Makes Comeback After Surviving Staph Infection

Sarah Cotton, a former student at Daniel Hand High School and a member of the Georgetown Hoyas’ cross-country team finished her season strong despite recovering from a serious staph infection.

Usually staph infections don’t cause any problems but can turn deadly if the bacteria involved enters deeper into the bloodstream, according to Mayo Clinic.

According to the New Haven Register, Cotton developed a stress fracture in her pelvis leading into the 2013 Fall Season, which doctors discovered was actually a staph infection. After undergoing treatment for several months, Cotton was back for the Fall 2014 season.

Cotton began training again slowly making her way back and eventually into the top seven at Georgetown, ultimately helping the Hoyas to a fourth place finish at the NCAA championships last month in Indiana.

Doctors had told Cotton she was lucky to be alive, the paper reports, making her story one of remarkable perseverance and accomplishment.
