Obituary: Edward Robert Guenther, 84, of Madison
Ed was honored in 2016, receiving the Madison Lions Club Public Service Award, as well as becoming Madison's Citizen of the Year.

Edward Robert Guenther, 84, of Madison, CT passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 22, 2018. Born during a raging snowstorm in New Britain, CT on February 20, 1934, he made headlines as “The Blizzard Baby.”
Ed was a dedicated public servant and proud American. Joining the Air Force in 1954 serving during the Korean War, after which he attended CCSU where he obtained a teaching degree. This is where he met his brilliant wife of 58 years, Caroline Larson. “Mr. G” taught 5th and 6th grade for the Madison Public Schools for 24 years.

Ed returned to the Air Force Reserves in 1974 where he continued serving his country until 1994, retiring as a First Sgt.-SMSgt. Edward volunteered much of his time to the town of Madison by serving on many commissions and committees; most notably as Police Commissioner for 12 years. He took great joy in being a Justice of the Peace and has married numerous couples, including some former students.
He took great joy in planning and organizing the annual Memorial Day Parade and serving as the Parade Marshall for the town of Madison for 40 years. Ed was honored in 2016, receiving the Madison Lions Club Public Service Award, as well as becoming Madison’s Citizen of the Year.

As a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather he will be dearly missed. Survived by his wife and best friend, Caroline, his daughters Cheryl Martin and Lisa Sweeney and her husband Robert, “son” Edward Grafe and his partner Mark, his six grandchildren, Rachel (Andrew), Frank (Stacey), John (Bri), Steven (Hannah), Shawn, and Jessica, as well as eight great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his siblings Don (Joann), Wayne (Sharon) and Lynda (Bob) Bonato.Ed’s family will receive friends at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford on Tuesday, February 27 between the hours of 5 - 7pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 28 at 10am at St. Margaret’s Church, 24 Academy St, Madison. Burial with Military Honors will follow in West Cemetery, Madison.
