Obituary: ​Joseph Paul Pegnataro Sr., 84, of Madison

Joseph Paul Pegnataro Sr. 84 of Madison passed away peacefully on March 24, 2018 in his home amongst family members. He was born January 5, 1934 in New Haven, son of the late Anthony Pegnataro Sr. and Jospephine Farace.

He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1952 where he was captain of basketball, baseball team, and co-captain of the football team. Joe served in the Army during the Korean War and then was appointed, by his father, Vice President of the Pegnataro's Super Foods Store Chain where he worked most of his life. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was an avid tennis player and he started the Senior Tennis league on the shoreline which now has over 70 members. Joe was also a loyal NY Giants Fan and loved watching the UCONN Girls Basketball. He was also a master gardener as he was always lending his advice, time and energy to his close neighbors.

Joe is survived by his wife Evelyn of 65 years, his children Joseph Pegnataro Jr. of Old Lyme, Joanne Schmidt of Florida, Cindy Swick of Griswold, Jana Nicoll of Westbrook, Robert Pegnataro of Florida, Christopher Pegnataro of Branford as well as 12 wonderful grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Mary Tagliatela of North Haven and his brother Tony Pegnataro of Branford and predeceased by his brother, Donald Pegnataro. A Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at St Margaret’s R.C. Church, 24 Academy St, Madison on Thursday, March 29th at 10:30am.
