Raptors, Reptiles, Seals, Atlatl, and Maple Syrup at the Popular Bauer Series

Four popular free educational events of lectures, demonstrations, and hiking returns to the shoreline this winter. They are put on by the Friends of Hammonasset and sponsored by the Guilford Savings Bank.
A live raptor show will be held February 4th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church, 232 Durham Rd. (Rt. 79) Madison. It is presented by Todd Secki and Christine Cummings-Secki and staff from A Place Called Hope - a bird rescue and rehabilitation facility in Killingworth, CT.
A nature/archaeology hike will be held on February 18th at 1:00 p.m. starting at Meigs Point Nature Center in Hammonasset Beach State Park. Led by Gary Nolf and Don Rankin, representing Friends of the Office of State Archaeology and Friends of Hammonasset. Seals might be spotted sunning themselves off Meigs Point. Archaeology exhibits will be available in the Nature Center from Noon to 3pm; folks can bring their own artifacts for interpretation. The atlatl will be demonstrated. Folks participate at their own risk and should dress for wintry conditions. No pets allowed on the hike.

A live reptile show is happening on February 11th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church, 232 Durham Rd. (Rt. 79) Madison. It will be presented by Russ Miller, Park Ranger of Meigs Point Nature Center.
An Open House and Demonstration of Maple Syrup Production will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Matteson’s Maple Manor, 235 Green Hill Road, Madison, CT. During the Open House Jim Matteson will demonstrate the Native American tradition of making maple syrup using a modern, stainless steel, Small Brothers evaporator. This small batch operator will also have a variety of maple syrup grades for sale in pint, quart, half gallon containers, and 500ml fancy gift bottles with the Matteson’s Maple Manor label. The Friends of Hammonasset is a 501c3 organization dedicated to providing environmental education and preserving natural resources.
