Renegade Dark Holler Pop Stringband MIPSO coming to Madison!
The New Wave of Old Time Music at Fire In The Kitchen Concerts. MIPSO brings their front-porch harmonies and tunes to Madison January 17

Playing at the Fire In The Kitchen Concert Series, Mipso comes up from the Carolinas on January 17, at 7:00 PM.
From the classic front-porch musical tradition of great harmony singing comes Mipso. Sort of. They take some of the best songwriting in the country and turn it into a fresh sound of renegade string-band music. It sounds old and familiar, new and fresh, with some pretty sly humor thrown in. They call it “Dark Holler Pop,” but what you’ll call it is fantastic. See why they’re packing large halls all across the south. It’s the past and the future all rolled in to one band.
The songs sound timeless, with that “I’ve heard that before” feeling. But they’re new. The win national songwriting contests, over the likes of Gillian Welch. They bring all their experiences to the table. Some were classically trained, some in jazz, and one even took a year off to study winemaking in New Zealand.

Older folks in the family will say they sound just like the old country records from the 30’s and 40’s (ok, really older...) but the younger kids will be saying they sound as fresh as the Lumineers or Old Crow Medicine Show.
No matter where you think they fall, they uphold the Fire IN The Kitchen Concerts tradition of Scary Good Music. Grammy winners? Been there, done that. We’re the best-kept secret in the local music scene, but internationally-known in the industry. There’s a reason music biz pros make the trip out from NYC: they want to see up close and personal who the best young bands are in the country.
