Top 10 Most Stressful Places to Live in Connecticut: Report

A website studied commuting times, things for residents to do, unemployment rate and other items. Is your town among the most stressed?

It may look idyllic, with the Pachaug and Quinebaug rivers running through it, but Jewett City is the most stressful town in Connecticut, according to a new report from career path website Zippia.com.

The site came up with a list of 10 stressed communities in the state by looking at criteria from the American Community Survey from the Census Department, such as:

  • Commute Time (Longer is worse)
  • Hours worked per week (Longer is worse)
  • Size of household (Lower is worse)
  • Things to do per capita (Lower is worse)
  • Unemployment Rate (Higher is worse)
  • Poverty Rate (Higher is worse)

All 10 are towns where residents ”struggle to find steady jobs, can’t always live comfortably, and then don’t get to enjoy things like family and friends as often as they would like.”

With that in mind, these 10 communities represent the top (lowest?) most stressed in Connecticut:

  1. Jewett City
  2. Westbrook Center
  3. Stafford Springs
  4. Westbrook Village
  5. Rockville
  6. Moosup
  7. Terryville
  8. New Milford
  9. Madison Center
  10. Essex Village

“Basically, if you waste time getting to and from work, work more, and haven’t quite started on building a family, you’re on the road to an incomplete work-life balance,” Zippia writes. “It’s also important that a place offers things to do and that people that want to work can actually work. For that reason, we included the raw count of things to do for a city based on Yelp data, the unemployment rate, and people living above the poverty line.”
