Three years ago we moved this established (the word I use when I don't know the age...I suppose it could apply nicely to people when necessary) clematis. Standing alone along our driveway under a large evergreen, it seemed to produce never more than a single flower. That fall, my husband dug up the huge root ball (clematis don't like to be moved) and tap root and we crossed our fingers after lowering it into the hole next to our fireplace facing west.
Other than watering it well that first fall and feeding it compost during transplant and once last fall, it's fate was in Antheia's hands.
The following year we saw some leaves. The second we got one flower. This display is what we waited for. The sweet William at its feet protect the roots from intense afternoon sun. It enjoys the house's heat in winter and protection from harsh winds. It's quite a treat since, as a lazy gardener who really enjoys self propagating perennials, I never would have selected it for my garden. I'm glad I inherited and kept it.
Does anyone else have a photo of a beautiful clematis to share?
