The Future Looks Bright For Madison Football

Five Madison Youth Football teams have reached the finals of the Shoreline Youth Football Conference Grade/Division Championships. All five games will be played this Sunday at Guilford High School.

With the Daniel Hand Football Team idle this week as they prepare for next Wednesday night's contest against Guilford, we'll turn our attention to the younger players.  The ones who hope to replace them someday.

This Sunday marks the end of the youth football season and Madison Youth Football has placed a team in the final game for each of the five available grade/divisions.  Madison belongs to the Shoreline Youth Football Conference and competes with teams from 21 towns and cities in the South Central Connecticut area.  Each Madison team has won two playoff games to reach the Championship Round.

4th Grade

The 4th grade team ended the regular season with a 6-2 record.  In the playoffs they faced a tough Cheshire team in the quarterfinal and an undefeated Clinton team in the semis.  Sunday's game will feature a rematch with North Haven B, who defeated them in the regular season.

5th Grade

The 5th grade team won it all last year as 4th graders and they continued that success with an 8-0 regular season.  They defeated North Branford and Southington to advance to the final game where they will face Guilford on their home turf.

6th Grade

The 6th grade team will look to avenge their only loss during their 7-1 regular season as they face North Haven.  They defeated Cheshire A and Guilford in the playoffs.

7th Grade

The 7th grade Cougars went 6-2 during the regular season.  One of those two losses was to North Haven, which the Cougars defeated 16-6 this past Sunday to advance to the finals.  Head Coach John Scoopo and the coaching staff are preparing the Cougars for a rematch with East Haven, (A team that finished 2nd in the AYF Nationals last year) who handed the Cougars their 2nd loss during the regular season.

8th Grade

The 8th grade team went 8-0 during the regular season and Sunday's game will feature a rematch with North Haven who they defeated in September at the Yale Bowl in a featured game for "Yale Youth Day."  That loss was the only blemish on North Haven's 7-1 season.  The 8th graders also defeated East Haven and Tri-Town to make it to the final game.

Another Outstanding Year

MYF President, Matt Sullivan, (who is also the 8th grade head coach), stated that he couldn't be happier with the way this season has turned out.  "Regardless of the outcome of Sunday's games, just to be competing for each and every division championship is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to the hard work of the players along with many volunteer coaches and team managers."
