The Urban Archeologist: Another tip for finding treasure
Wooden or not - take this nickel for example
Whether I am waiting on line to enter an estate sale, or perusing room after room of selected items, there is one thing I notice. I am not like the other pickers and diggers.
Many of my fellow searchers are focused and fast. Some are willing to talk, if I engage them in conversation, What're you looking for?" Many are not in a room long enough for me to be sure they were ever there.
I know that when one does this to make money, there is no time to waste. A single delay could cause you to miss something at one sale or the next five to be visited that day.
I don't fault anyone for rushing, but I know it causes many to miss some opportunities. One of those is the Free Pile. You may have seen it at the end or by the side of the driveway, half full of things nobody would seem to want: Tupperware that will never "burp" again, Kitchen utensils that have no right to be in any kitchen.
Take a look at the image above, Sitting in the bottom of one of these "free" boxes this over-sized coin from 1926 was looking for a home. I was looking for a research project and a story. I got both. Looking closely and taking your time could allow you to find something even more amazing - Click here to see what else I found.
