Tigers Rise to the Top

With a 7-0 record against some of the toughest competition in the state, the voters have placed Hand near the top of the polls. The Tigers will look to continue that success tonight at the Surf Club as they take on the East Haven Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m.

Xavier and Masuk have battled all year for the number one ranking in the polls.  Each team is a returning State Champion with long active win streaks.  Hand started the year near the #10 spot and has gradually moved up to #3 or #4 in most polls.  With three weeks to go in the regular season (barring any upsets of the teams ahead of them) it is unlikely that Hand will move any higher.  The toughest part of Hand’s schedule is over.  They will be the favorite in their remaining games, so it will be hard to impress the voters by winning games that they are expected to win.  Hand will not meet Xavier this year, but they have a very good chance to face Masuk at some point in the post-season.

In tonight’s game the Tigers will see a struggling East Haven team that has managed only one win this year against Platt Tech.  In the next two games the Tigers will see Hamden who is 1-6, (but did play close games with North Haven and West Haven) and Guilford (currently 3-4) on Thanksgiving Eve.

Patch Player of the Week

There were several key contributors to last week’s comeback win against West Haven.  Kevin Frey had 188 yards rushing, the offensive line did an excellent job blocking, the defense completely shut down the West Haven running game, but it was Senior receiver Nick Vitale’s three touchdown catches in the second half that broke the back of the West Haven defense.

Around the SCC

The SCC game of the week will be Cheshire at Notre Dame West Haven at 7.  With 3 losses, Cheshire is likely out of the running for a Class LL playoff spot, but ND is fighting for survival and still has an outside shot to finish in the top 8 for Class L, provided that they win the rest of the way.

Standings

There was a lot of shake-up in Week 7.  New London, Darien, Bunnell and Farmington all suffered their first loss of the year.  That made room for Masuk and North Haven to pry their way in to the top eight.

Here are the Class L Standings

  1. Windsor
  2. Daniel Hand
  3. New Canaan
  4. Coventry/Windham Tech
  5. Masuk
  6. Bunnell
  7. New London
  8. North Haven

If the season ended this way, (it won’t) New London would be traveling to the Surf Club for a first round game, and Masuk would be traveling to Coventry/Windham Tech? (Oooh... now that would be ugly!)
