Water Fiction

Carol Goodman
Lake of Dead Languages

Carol Goodman and Alice Hoffman are on the same branch of the same tree.  Using similar themes and somewhat the same style they both resonate with me.   Lake of Dead Languages  is the first in Goodman’s repertoire and it is eerily reminiscent of Alice Hoffman’s River King.  That’s not a bad thing at all; as I thoroughly enjoyed both books.

In Lake of Dead Languages Goodman weaves a tale about a tragedy at boarding school for young people, where three lives were taken.  Now in present time, the TRUE story of what happened all those years ago is coming to light.

Goodman has a water fetish as most of her books center around water.  I’ve read several of her books and each one has been well done.  Check her out.  I think you’ll feel the same way.

Alice Hoffman
The River King

Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite writers.  She writes slipstream fiction, another way of describing her work is magic realism.  Hoffman finds a way to weave magic into the mundane.  River King is no different.  This book has long been a favorite of mine and it is one of the few books that I have read multiple times.  The first sentence sets the mood for the entire book and that opening line is so sensual.

You can sense every word.  It is one of the reasons Hoffman is such a favorite of mine.  She has such a way with words.

Thomas H. Cook
The Cloud of Unknowing

Having read many of Thomas Cook’s books, Cook has long been another favorite writer of mine.  The Cloud of Unknowing is no exception.  This book has water as its central theme as well.  A tragic death leads a mother to build a case against her husband.

Cook is one fine writer and if you haven’t yet discovered him, you are in for one wild ride, as he has a plethora of books to choose from.

Enjoy this wave of water inspired books.  Swim among the pages and I think you’ll find the stories here well done.

Until next time…
Turn the page.
