MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester is getting rickshaw service for the older crowd and those with mobility issues.

Cycling Without Age Manchester officials said Monday that the organization has reached its fundraising goal to purchase a rickshaw with start-up costs to "establish and implement the program in Manchester."

The rickshaw, "will improve the loneliness and isolation that so many feel as a result of being widowed, never married, or passing of their local family," organization officials said.

The reasoning behind the moves is that "many are interested in enjoying the outdoors but find it difficult due to mobility issues."

Sustainable CT matched every dollar donated and Arbors of Hop Brook emerged as a major sponsor, officials said. The program is targeting older and disabled residents.

Said Michelle Puzzo, the executive director of UR Community Cares, "We started this program to improve the mental health of residents in the region, bring people together, and enjoy the beautiful weather."

Brandy Page, the executive director at the Arbors of Hop Brook said the program corresponds with the center's "active aging and wellness philosophy" that provides "an outlet for residents to increase mobility, enjoy fresh air and local scenery, and helps to build a stronger sense of community."

She added, "We are very excited to sponsor the program and help it grow."

The rickshaw is designed to offer bike riding outings to the elderly and those with disabilities in a "relaxing and comfortable front seat," Puzzo said.

Local volunteers called "pilots" or drivers will be trained and organized to provide the service, officials said. Riders will experience the parks and town of Manchester while celebrating the 2023 Bicentennial Celebration, officials said.
