MANCHESTER, CT — An overnight crash in Manchester involving a tractor-trailer left an oil slick on a stretch of highway and the vehicles precariously close to a 50-foot drop, fire officials said.

The crash took place at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday near Exit 62 on the westbound side of Interstate 84.

According to Manchester Fire Department officials, a tractor trailer struck a vehicle in the HOV lane and then broke through a barrier on an overpass, which is positioned 50 feet from the ground below.

Both vehicles sustained "significant damage," but did not fall from the overpass, fire officials said.

The occupants were able to get out of the vehicles without extrication. One person was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.

Another person "refused transportation against medical advice" from MFD paramedics, fire officials said.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene for a "significant oil spill" and a crew from the Connecticut Department of Transportation responded to assess the damage to the overpass and make repairs.

The vehicles were removed in time for the morning commute.
