I have given a certain insurance agent over 30 referrals since the beginning of the year. She has many times apologized for not giving me more referrals and I always tell her, take good care of my clients, that makes me look good.
Two weeks ago she handled a claim for a flooded basement for one of my referrals. The client wrote in her Facebook page about the experience of being referred to the insurance agent by me. She commented that anytime she needs a referral for just about anything, she contacts me.
I have since had two of her friends contact me. One of them needed a referral for a plumber the other is having her daughter contact me regarding getting preapproved for a mortgage.
Giving without an expectation of getting something in return is not an easy concept to master, but I can assure you, it has always served me well.
