Manchester Apartment Fire Leaves 1 Critical, Displaces 5 Residents

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester firefighters rescued a trapped victim from an early morning apartment fire on Bluefield Drive Sunday that sent one person to a trauma center in critical condition and displaced five residents, according to information released about the response.

Manchester Fire was dispatched at 12:39 a.m. to 42 Bluefield Dr. for an automatic fire alarm, fire officials said. While companies were en route, they were advised there was a possible fire in the building with a victim trapped. The first company arrived at 12:44 a.m. and found fire coming out of two first-floor windows and extending to the roof of the two-story, 12-unit apartment building, fire officials said.

A second alarm was transmitted, bringing all seven Manchester Fire companies to the scene.

Firefighters began an interior fire attack and a search of the building and a person was found trapped in a first-floor apartment and was rescued by firefighters from Truck 2, officials said.

The victim was in critical condition and was resuscitated by firefighters at the scene before being transported to a local trauma center, officials said.

No other occupants or firefighters were injured, according to the incident information. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. Although three of the building's 12 units sustained significant damage, the building was not considered a total loss. officials said.

Five residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. The release did not identify the victim or the displaced residents.

The Fire Marshal's Office and the Manchester Police Department have started an investigation into the fire's origin and cause. The cause of the fire had not been determined as of Monday.
