Manchester Cops Investigating Thefts, Vandalism At Cemetery

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester police are investigating a case of theft and vandalism and theft at East Cemetery.

MPD spokesman Lt. Ryan Shea said police will begin to step up their presence after a resident complained that mums were stolen just hours after being planted at a grave site at the cemetery.

The resident, who spoke to Patch in a phone interview but requested anonymity, said the grave was first targeted after a set of small trees was planted.

She said the grave is close to the road and thinks it's just easy to get to.

"it's a huge issue for my family, but I don't think we're being targeted," the resident said. "But who does that? What kind of person would do that?"

After the first batch of mums was planted by the local mom, the flowers were taken — uprooted, the resident said. She said a second set was also stolen.

Some pumpkins were also taken after being placed at the grave, the resent said.

The resident said she then reported the incident to the police.

"The officer was great," the resident said. "The police will do what they can do, but I hope it stops. If It happens again, I hope someone sees something and reports it."

She said the MPD will pay extra attention to the cemetery.
