MANCHESTER, CT — A 19-year-old who at first seemed like the victim in a stabbing last week at a Dunkin' Donuts in Manchester is now facing charges and is accused of being the aggressor, police said.

The incident took place at 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 16, at the Dunkin' at 255 Middle Turnpike West.

After rushing to the scene after a 911 call, officers discovered that both people involved in the altercation had left the establishment, according to an incident report.

One had been transported to Manchester Memorial Hospital by private vehicle with several stab wounds from head to torso, police said in a report. The other was tracked down by Officer Corey Fullana and police dog Dakota behind a business on Broad Street, police said. The 52-year-old man cooperated with investigators and told officers that he acted in self-defense after he was attacked inside the Dunkin' Donuts, police said.

Police said detectives then reviewed surveillance video from inside the business and it corroborated the man's story that the stabbing was in self-defense.

The 19-year-old who went to the hospital was identified as Elijah Madera, police said. He was seen on video punching and "violently attacking" the 52-year-old, who was unable to retreat," according to a police report.

"There was no indication that the victim utilized the knife in any other manner other than to defend himself. Even after the initial scuffle, Elijah continued the altercation, throwing electronic items owned by the victim and again punching him," police said.

After consulting with the Hartford State's Attorney, investigators secured an arrest warrant for Madera, who surrendered at the Manchester Police Department early Monday, police said.

He has been charged with assault and criminal mischief, both in the second degree.

Madera was released on a $50,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Nov. 20.
