Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Hartford and Tolland Counties

On April 15, northern sections of the state are under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Somehow we've gone from 70 degrees on Saturday to the issuance of a Winter Weather Advisory on Sunday/Monday for Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties. On April 15, 2018 the forecast calls for freezing rain in northern sections of the state followed by a heavy rainstorm that could drop two inches of rain on the region.

We may even see thunderstorms on Monday. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 2 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday.

"* WHAT...Sleet and pockets of freezing rain expected. Total ice accumulations of a trace to less than one tenth of an inch are expected.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The ice may result in areas of slippery travel conditions on untreated surfaces."

"A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving."

And then on Monday, the weather service says, "Bands of heavy rain may cause localized street flooding on Monday. Strong southerly wind gusts are possible... Rain and snowmelt across the headwaters may result in significant rises of the Connecticut River during next week, with a risk of approaching or exceeding flood stage."

Here is the updated stormy forecast for northern Connecticut:

Today: A slight chance of rain before 1pm, then a chance of rain after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Northeast wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: Rain, mainly after 7pm. Patchy fog after 1am. Low around 34. Northeast wind 10 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog. High near 51. Northeast wind 10 to 14 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Monday Night: Rain likely before midnight, then a chance of showers, mainly between midnight and 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
