Human Remains Found In Chaplin Positively Identified As Missing Mansfield Woman

The body found in a wooded area in Chaplin Friday morning has been positively identified as a Mansfield woman who disappeared last fall.

The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner on Monday confirmed the remains belong to Anne Marie Pappalardo, 61, of Mansfield.

Pappalardo had last been seen on Sunday, Oct. 26.

The cause of her death is pending further study, and the manner of death is pending further investigation, the medical examiner’s office said Monday.

Both the state police and volunteers scoured the Natchaug State Forest searching for her immediately following her disappearance, to no avail. Her car had been found near Natchaug State Forest.

At about 8:03 a.m. Friday, people out walking called state police with Troop D to report they had discovered what they believed to be human remains in the vicinity of North Bedlam Road and Bedlam Road in Chaplin.

Police on Friday said they believed the remains belonged to the woman reported missing in the fall, but they wanted positive confirmation from the medical examiner’s office.

“There is no evidence to suggest anything suspicious in nature,” state police said Monday.

The Eastern District Major Crime Unit is involved in the investigation, which is ongoing.
