Ban on Plastic Checkout Bags Being Proposed in Mansfield

An ordinance is being considered that would ban plastic checkout bags in Mansfield

MANSFIELD, CT — A movement has surfaced to ban plastic supermarket and checkout bags in Mansfield.

Recycling Coordinator Virginia Walton said Thursday that it is too early to release details, but added an ordinance will likely be drafted and sent to the Town Council based on research and public input.

In a nutshell, the proposal will be to ban "plastic checkout bags," she said.

The Mansfield Solid Waste Advisory Committee has been studying the "negative effects" of plastic checkout bags. Walton said.

Two presentations will be made on what the committee has learned and how a proposed ban could be worded, she said.

The presentations are scheduled for:

April 19 at 11 a.m. at the Mansfield Senior Center

April 30 at 7 pm in the Buchanan Auditorium of the Mansfield Library
