Diehards Watch UConn's Shocking Exit from Final Four

Thin crowds across the Storrs campus watch Maya Moore end her career for the Huskies.

Small turnouts across campus served as witnesses to Maya Moore's last game for the University of Connecticut women's basketball team on Sunday night, a shocking exit for the Huskies in the national semifinal.

UConn lost 72-63 to Notre Dame, a team it had beaten three times already this season.

Campus bars remained relatively quiet, but the diehards applauded  every time Moore sank a hoop.

Many tables went empty at the Student Union, which fared little better with the viewing party at the Union Street Market, despite the allure of free popcorn.

Many UConn students opted to stay in their dorms to watch the game, like UConn senior Patrick Whalen and his freshman sister, Jeanne, who watched it in Patrick's South Campus dorm room.

The Huskies had five-point lead at halftime, but Notre Dame dominated the second half to hand UConn its second loss this season.

Stanford, the only other team to defeat UConn, lost to Texas A&M in the other Final Four game on Sunday.

"Maya is still my hero," said Jeanne.

The UConn Men's basketball team faces Butler tonight. Students can watch the championship game together at Gampel Pavilion.
