Dump Truck Crash Closes Part of Route 44

A Mansfield Fire Department ambulance was called to the scene of a Route 44 crash.

ASHFORD, CT — The Mansfield Fire Department was called to assist with an ambulance at the scene of a Wednesday morning dump truck accident that closed a section of Route 44 in Ashford, according to Tolland County 911.

The crash was first reported at 6:18 a.m. by Tolland County 911. It took place along the 50 block of Pompei Hollow Road, the local address for that portion of Route 44, according to Tolland County 911.

The officer in charge reported through Tolland County 911 that the truck was a tri-axle and that someone was trapped.

Route 44 was closed for about two hours between routes 74 and 89 state police said to Tolland County 911.

According to a state police crash report, a Kenworth T800 registered out of Brooklyn, was being driven by 36-year-old Lawrence Costamello of Wolf Den Road, Brooklyn. The car, a 2002 Toyota Camry, was being driven by Shanon Turgeon, 20, of Pine Street, Vernon, according to a state police crash report.

The truck was traveling west on Route 44 and the Toyota was in the eastbound lane, according to a state police crash report.

The car suddenly cross the center divider, hit the truck's front end and then bounced off it, according to a state police. The vehicle came a rest on opposite shoulders, according a state police crash report.

Both sustained unspecified injuries. Turgeon was taken to Hartford Hospital and Costamello was taken to Windham Hospital, according to a state police crash report.
