Final Phase Of Cleanup Underway At Train Derailment Site In Mansfield

Route 32 will be closed intermittently at times this week, town officials said.

MANSFIELD, CT — More heavy equipment has arrived at the site of a freight train derailment in Mansfield.

Town officials Monday said Route 32 was closed temporarily during the operation. It re-opened to through traffic at about 3 p.m.

It was all part of the cleanup efforts as the final phase of the efforts commences, town officials said. Route 32 will be closed intermittently at other times this week as equipment is transported to and from the site, town officials said.

Even when the road is closed again later this week, access to businesses will be allowed from the South Eagleville Road/Route 275 end of Route 32, and daycare centers in the area will remain accessible to families from Route 44, town officials said.

The accident took place on Feb. 5 The train derailment occurred just before 9:30 a.m. Most of the train cars were carrying a flammable liquefied propane, authorities said. A total of 14 cars became detached from the train while traveling in Mansfield.

Gov. Ned Lamont said that none of the train cars carrying a flammable liquefied propane had leaked. One car carrying cooking grease leaked to the tune of 2,500 gallons and was contained, he said.
