Former UConn Men's Soccer Coach Joe Morrone Passes Away

The Hall of Fame coach who led the team for 28 years passed away Wednesday.

Legendary University of Connecticut soccer coach Joseph J. Morrone, who led UConn to the NCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship in 1981, passed away on Wednesday night, the school announced Thursday. He was 79.

Morrone was an athletic and academic leader at UConn community for 45 years, starting his UConn tenure in July of 1969 when he was named head coach of UConn men’s soccer and becoming an associate professor of kinesiology when he retired from coaching in 1996. During his coaching tenure, Morrone established a nationally-elite collegiate program.
