Global Latinos:  Connecticut’s Latin American Diaspora

On Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 4-5:30pm, The Windham Textile and History Museum will host a Museum Lyceum lecture:  Global Latinos:  Connecticut’s Latin American Diaspora.  Guest speaker will be Dr. Mark Overmyer-Valasquez, Professor of History at UConn and director of El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean & Latin American Studies.  Professor Overmyer-Valasquez’s presentation examines how Willimantic’s Latinos are part of larger state, national and global diasporic movements.  The talk de-centers the history and experience of Latinos away from the United States as a singular and single migratory destination and considers instead a larger global frame work for understanding the movement of people from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event is free to the public.  Donations are requested. For more information, contact the Windham Textile & History Museum, 411 Main Street, Willimantic, CT 06226. Website:  www.millmuseum.org, Phone:  860-456-2178, e-mail:  themillmuseum@gmail.com.
