COLUMBIA, CT — The rustic and stylish roadside eatery on Route 66 known as The Main Moose will stay closed for the 2026 season.

Attempts to sell the business have fallen short, its owners said Friday.

"After exploring a potential sale of the restaurant, things did not move forward as we had hoped," the owners said in a social media post. "Because of this, The Main Moose will remain closed for the 2026 season. This was not an easy decision, and we know it may come as a disappointment to so many of you who have supported us over the years. We are incredibly grateful for the memories, the loyal customers, pets, and the community that has made this place so special. We'll continue to keep you updated on what the future holds."

On Oct. 28, the owners said they were closing the business after seven years.

The Main Moose is located at 94 Route 66 in Columbia. It was a popular stop with travelers headed to Eastern Connecticut State University and that part of the state.

The Moose was famous for its dogs and burgers, especially The Moose Burger that came with cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion rings and the secret "Moose Sauce."

There were even seafood selections that include fish and chips, and that old New England Staple, fried whole belly clams.

And there was ice cream.

The Moose was even frequented by the voice of legendary eastern Connecticut troubadour Bruce John.
