Students and Pratt & Whitney Mentors Benefit from Senior Design Day

Gampel Pavilion was recently host to the UConn School of Engineering’s “Senior Design Demonstration Day,” an event in which student teams exhibit, explain and demonstrate engineering projects which they have completed through one- and two-semester capstone design courses.

Projects are typically sponsored by a company, which provides financial support and mentorship on a specific dilemma they’ve suggested.

Student teams then research the problem, conceive solutions and construct a working prototype which demonstrates a solution.

Throughout the process, teams and sponsors communicate in a variety of ways, including meetings, via conference calls and through reports.

The UConn student team of from left, Sean Lapuk, James Prota and Stephanie Loeb conducted experiments to determine if a Pratt & Whitney kinematic box performed adequately.

With mentorship from Kurt Heinemann of Pratt & Whitney and Faculty Advisor Professor Eric Jordan, the students were able to expertly explain the various factors that went into their work.  For more information about Pratt & Whitney’s community programs, visit www.utc.com/makethingsbetter
