So you’ve written your first short story or novel. Now what?

 Join widely-published author, Pushcart nominee, and co-founding editor of pro-paying magazine Read Short Fiction Kristi Petersen Schoonover to learn tips, tools and secrets to submitting your work at a Submissions Mastery Workshop on Sunday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Books and Boos, 514 Westchester Road, Colchester, CT.

 Submitting your work for publication involves more than just attaching a document to an email and clicking “send.” In today’s competitive world, it’s a nuanced process that, if not mastered, can land your finely honed work in a drawer and the business side of your career a mess.

 This comprehensive workshop will focus on:

 • Submitting to magazines, anthologies, and small presses
• Meticulous manuscript format
• Crafting the best cover letter
• Following guidelines (and why failing to do so really does mean rejection)
• Corresponding with editors (and how this can affect your career down the road)
• Finding markets for your work using online databases
• Seeking out lesser-known opportunities and matching your work to the right market
• Deciphering submissions language and interpreting sale of rights
• Tracking submissions
• Advice and coping mechanisms for dealing with rejection

 Kristi Petersen Schoonover’s novel, Bad Apple, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her short fiction has appeared in countless magazines and anthologies; she has received three Norman Mailer Writers Colony Residencies, serves as a judge for New York City Midnight's short story and flash competitions, and is a co-founding editor at Read Short Fiction. For the past fifteen years, she has presented workshops on the submissions process at many venues, among them Burlington College and Goddard College, and to several writers’ groups.

 The Submissions Mastery Workshop will be held Sunday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Books and Boos bookstore at 514 Westchester Road in Colchester, CT. The $25 cost for the program includes donuts and coffee in the morning, lunch, and take-away materials.
